Privacy Policy
What Focus Lab does not have
- No user account
- No sign-up, no password
- No central server hosting your data
- No advertising trackers
- No cookies (there is no web-based layer in the app)
- No third-party analytics (no Firebase, Mixpanel, etc.)
- No Apple tracking identifier (IDFA)
What Focus Lab uses — and how
1. Screen Time data (Apple's FamilyControls framework)
When you grant Screen Time access, Focus Lab receives anonymized tokens from Apple representing the apps you choose to monitor. These tokens are encrypted and unreadable, even to us, by Apple's own design.
- Where it's stored: in a shared storage container on your iPhone (iOS App Group), accessible only by Focus Lab and its monitoring extension.
- What we see: nothing. We don't know which apps you're monitoring. Apple only hands us opaque tokens.
- Retention: as long as you use Focus Lab. Deleting the app removes everything.
2. Usage thresholds
Focus Lab measures how many minutes you've spent on selected apps in order to trigger reminders. This calculation happens entirely on your iPhone, by Apple's DeviceActivityMonitor extension running in its own isolated process.
- Where it's stored: in the extension's memory, temporarily. No persistent database.
- What we see: nothing.
3. Your preferences (personality, interval, monitored apps)
These settings are stored in shared UserDefaults, a local iOS storage. They never leave your device.
4. Notifications
Focus Lab sends local notifications on your iPhone. They are generated on your device from a pool of 90 pre-written messages bundled in the app. No notifications are sent from a remote server (no push notifications).
Payments and subscriptions
The Pro subscription is handled via StoreKit, Apple's official payment infrastructure.
- Apple handles the entire transaction
- We never see your credit card number
- We only receive an anonymous confirmation from Apple that your subscription is active
- You can cancel anytime in iOS Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions
For Apple's payment policy, see apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/.
Third-party sharing
We do not share any data with third parties, because we don't have any to share.
Exceptions only if required by law: if a judicial authority requested data via a warrant, we would respond that we hold none.
Your rights (GDPR / CCPA)
Since Focus Lab does not store any data outside your iPhone:
- Right to access: all your data is already on your device, accessible in the app.
- Right to erasure: uninstall Focus Lab. All data is deleted instantly from your device.
- Right to portability: not applicable (no database to export).
- Right to object: not applicable (no processing outside your device).
Children and minors
Focus Lab is rated 4+ according to Apple's classification. The app does not collect any personal data from anyone, including children. The FamilyControls authorization we use is of type "individual" (the person installing the app monitors their own phone), not parental/child.
Security
- All authentication, Screen Time data access, and storage are handled by Apple's official APIs.
- We collect nothing, so there is nothing to leak.
- The app is signed with our Apple developer certificate and distributed only through the official App Store.
